Birmingham Fire And Rescue Will Install Free Smoke Detectors

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Thursday reminded citizens it will provide and install smoke detectors in homes.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Having a smoke detector in ones home could make the difference between living or dying. And Birmingham Fire and Rescue reminded citizens Thursday night that it provides and installs smoke detectors in homes.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue was at the Peace in the Park event Thursday night to address what has been a series of house fires this year, notable a recent one in the Wylam community that resulted in three casualties - a mother and her two children.

This was the second deadly fire in Wylam in just a matter of weeks, with an earlier incident claiming the life of a 70-year-old man.

"A working smoke detector is just one part of a home safety plan. The second, and just equally as important, is to have an exit drill or exit plan for you to find two ways out of your house if it’s on fire," said Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo in a WBRC interview.

Residents of Birmingham can contact the fire department for a free smoke detector. They will install it and test it before they leave. Contact them at 205-785-1332. People who live outside the city limits can contact the American Red Cross at 205-795-8711.
