Birmingham's 'Brunch Bill' Passes Legislature
A bill that would allow Birmingham restaurants to serve alcohol on Sundays at 10 a.m. passed the Alabama legislature this week.

MONTGOMERY, AL - Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a bill that would allow Birmingham restaurants to serve alcohol on Sundays starting at 10 a.m. Currently, restaurants are unable to serve alcohol until noon on Sundays. The bill, dubbed the "Birmingham Brunch Bill" leaves the decision for earlier Sunday alcohol sales now in the hands of the Birmingham City Council.
Birmingham's restaurant scene is known well beyond the city limits, and even beyond the state of Alabama, and proponents of the bill believe it will only help strengthen an already strong culinary industry in the city.

The council was unable to get the proposal onto the ballot in the fall last year, which was why council members urged the state legislature to handle its passage. This way, the council can vote on it, and it does not go to polls in a costly special election.
