GoFundMe Campaign Set Up For Family Of Slain Roebuck Couple

A local church has set up a GoFundMe page for the family of a couple slain in their Roebuck home.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - When police were led to a home by a three-year-old girl with bloodstained clothes, they were met with a gruesome scene, as the bodies of Mary and Steve Holt were found dead and covered in blood. The murder of the couple, who had lived in their Roebuck neighborhood for decades, leaves behind children and grandchildren who will now be left in financial trouble due to the crime.

Grace Episcopal Church in Woodlawn has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for the family of Mary and Steve Holt as family members cope with the loss.

The Birmingham Police Department received the report about a young child wandering the street alone last Thursday afternoon, and when investigators arrived, they noticed the child's clothing was stained with blood. The child, later identified as the granddaughter of the couple who lived in the home, led officers to two unresponsive adults inside their home. Both adults were pronounced dead on the scene at 4:41 p.m.

"This tragedy has put an immediate financial burden on the family," the GoFundMe page reads. "We (their Grace Church family) are raising much-needed funds to cover funeral and other expenses, as well as the cost of sending Mary & Steve's granddaughter to daycare. Funds will be given directly to Mary & Steve's sons, Martin & Jesse. Donations in any amount will be helpful and deeply appreciated. If you are unable to give, please remember the family and friends in your prayers. We ask everyone to please respect the Holt family's privacy during this extremely difficult time."

The Holts' deaths have sent a ripple through the community. "Our community is heartbroken by the loss of Mary & Steve Holt to a senseless act of violence," the page states. "Mary & Steve were two of the finest people you could ever hope to meet. Mary was beyond kind. She gave me a hug each and every time I saw her (and I mean EVERY TIME). Steve was the happiest man - youthful and enthusiastic about a wide variety of topics. He could talk about Native American pottery, whiskey distillation, herb gardens, politics, and fish, just to name a few. Mary and Steve’s presence is imprinted at Grace Episcopal Church Woodlawn. "
