Hueytown Industrial Accident: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed

A woman has filed a wrongful death lawsuit after the Sept. 13 death of Michael Haith at Precoat Metals in Hueytown.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — A 37-year-old man died Sept. 13 in an industrial accident at Precoat Metals in Hueytown, and a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed as a result of the incident. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Michael Haith.

The lawsuit was filed this week in Jefferson County’s Bessemer Cutoff on behalf of Gerri Brown, the grandmother of Haith’s son. Haith was killed when he became pinned between two large steel coils. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:04 p.m.

An Alabama Media Group report said Brown is seeking punitive damages in an unspecified amount as well as workers compensation benefits.

Attorneys Whit Drake of the Drake Law Firm in Birmingham and Elizabeth Shaw of Shaw Family Law claim in the lawsuit that Precoat Metals "did control the conditions, methods, and manner in which work was performed at the time and place" when Haith was killed.
