BIRMINGHAM, AL — Despite comments by Pres. Donald Trump over the weekend, Alabama is not in the path of Hurricane Dorian. Birmingham meteorologist James Spann reiterated as much via social media after Trump lumped Alabama in with Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina as states that would be hit hard by the storm.

"In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated," Trump said via Twitter Sunday. "Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5."

Spann responded to Trump's tweet refuting the claim.

Dorian was packing sustained winds of 150 mph Monday, and was moving northward very slowly. The hurricane is a dangerous Category 4.

"As Dorian moves very slowly during the next 24 hours, some upwelling in the deeper waters around the Bahamas could cause some gradual weakening," Spann said. "After that time, the hurricane is expected to experience a gradual increase in southwesterly shear, which should lead to a slow decrease in wind speed. However, Dorian is forecast to remain a very powerful hurricane while it moves near the southeastern United States coast."

Spann added that life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida east coast and Georgia coast, regardless of the exact track of Dorian’s center. Water levels could begin to rise well in advance of the arrival of strong winds.
