Jefferson County BOE Appoints Interim Superintendent
Dr. Walter Gonsoulin will start September 27, the day after Dr. Craig Pouncey ends his term.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Jefferson County Board of Education has appointed an interim superintendent. Dr. Walter Gonsoulin will start September 27, the day after Dr. Craig Pouncey ends his term.
Pouncey announced his resignation last week after accepting the position of president of Coastal Alabama Community College. He attended his last school board meeting Wednesday morning to turn in his official resignation.
Gonsoulin is currently the deputy superintendent of school and community support, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to coming to the Jefferson County system, Gonsoulin had served as the Fairfield City Schools superintendent for five years. He also served as assistant superintendent with the Starkville, Miss., school district.

Pouncey will begin his new role with Coastal Alabama Community College Oct. 1. Pouncey has served as Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools since 2014 and was named Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents of Alabama. Pouncey previously spent nearly 10 years working with the state department of education.
