Man Charged With Capital Murder In Death Of 71-Year-Old Woman

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 37-year-old Birmingham man has been charged with capital murder in the Sept. 13 shooting death of Javanna Cotton Owens. Owens was shot while walking on Brussels Circle Sunday night.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said Owens was walking in her neighborhood when she approached a vehicle and was then shot by an occupant of the vehicle. Mauldin said FLOCK cameras recorded the license plate of the vehicle before it left the scene and police were able to locate and detain Kartavius Vines.

Vines was charged with capital murder Tuesday and remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
