Man Charged In Connection With Dog Fighting Near Mulga

A man taken into custody Sunday in connection with an alleged dog fighting ring near Mulga has been officially charged.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A man has been officially charged in connection with a suspected dog fighting operation near Mulga in Jefferson County. Reginald Antonio Dowdell was arrested by Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies after they broke up a dog fight on Sunday. More than 17 dogs were rescued, including four with obvious dog-fighting injuries.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies received a complaint of dogs fighting in the Mulga area.
Once on the scene, deputies said they could hear what sounded like dogs fighting in the woods behind a residence on Main Street. Deputies said proceeded towards the location and were met by a juvenile carrying an injured dog.

Once at the location of the dogs fighting, deputies discovered the dogs, and a ring with fresh blood inside. Approximately 11 dog skulls were also found.

Sheriff's detectives obtained one felony dog fighting warrant against Dowdell Monday afternoon, and could face three additional dog-fighting charges, and possibly 16 animal cruelty charges.
