Man Fires At Officers, Leads Police On All-Night Chase

Police made a traffic stop on Crestwood Boulevard Monday that turned into a night-long manhunt that lasted until Tuesday morning.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - What started as a traffic stop in Gate City Monday night turned into gunfire in front of Century Plaza on Crestwood Boulevard, and then a subsequent manhunt that involved a high-speed chase through the communities of Clay, Trussville and Argo. Police have a suspect in custody, a man they say shot at Birmingham police officers.

The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Georgia Road when East Precinct officers on patrol spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, according to an Alabama Media Group report. The officers tried to pull over the motorist, but he did not comply and a chase ensued. It was during the initial portion of the pursuit that the suspect fired on officers - reportedly more than a dozen times. One officer was injured by shattered glass.

The chase reportedly traveled along interstates 20, 59 and 459 before the suspect exited on Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville. The chase continued through the Clay area along Old Springville Road before the suspect crashed on Surrey Lane. He then fled on foot into a wooded area.
