Cradle-to-Career: New Report Outlines Multiyear Investment in the Livelihood of Birmingham Youth (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham leaders have unveiled a detailed cradle-to-career roadmap to boost economic mobility for the city's 73,000 children living in poverty, starting with pilot work in Woodlawn–Kingston and Smithfield–Titusville. The plan, backed by a $31.8 million spending package, focuses on childcare quality, after-school access, math and reading gains, and connecting young adults to jobs, internships, or degrees.

Birmingham City Schools offers $10K sign-on bonus to fill critical special education vacancies (wbrc.com) — Birmingham City Schools is offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus to attract certified special education teachers and fill 34 critical vacancies across the district. Leaders say rising special education needs and fewer education graduates are straining staffing, and they're pairing local incentives with state bonuses to bring more qualified educators into Birmingham classrooms.
   

4. Edward Perry Williamson (November 16, 1941 — September 21, 2026) (trussvilletribune.com) — Family and friends in the Birmingham area are invited to honor Edward Perry Williamson, who passed away in Trussville and studied engineering at UAB, during services at Jefferson Memorial on Gadsden Highway this Monday afternoon. Remembered for his long marriage, love of animals, craftsmanship and community-minded work, his family requests donations to Crossing Paths Animal Rescue in lieu of flowers.
   

5. Birmingham pastor follows father's footsteps at historic downtown church (al.com) — A familiar face has taken the pulpit at Metropolitan AME Zion Church in downtown Birmingham, where Rev. Erskine Faush Jr. is now pastor at the same historic congregation his late father once led. The church, long tied to Birmingham's civil rights history, is smaller than in its heyday, and Faush hopes to spark a spiritual and community revival from its Fourth Avenue North sanctuary.
