Coast Guard celebrates first graduating class at TRACEN Birmingham-Southern (seapowermagazine.org) — Birmingham is now home to the Coast Guard's new Training Center Birmingham-Southern, which just celebrated its first graduating class from the Leadership and Management School. With FORCECOM and the Leadership Development Center relocating here, more than 30 permanent personnel have already moved to Birmingham, positioning the former Birmingham-Southern College campus as an Enlisted Leadership Center of Excellence and a growing federal training hub.
   

2. Birmingham approves 31 homes on vacant former Hill School site (abc3340.com) — Birmingham's City Council has approved selling the long-vacant former Hill School property for $1 to a developer that will build 31 income-restricted single-family homes. Backed by more than $1.1 million in city assistance, the project aims to turn a deteriorating site into new housing, add residents, and eventually boost property tax revenue for city services and schools.
   

3. Birmingham City Schools Students Born in 1963 Invited to Commemorate Civil Rights Legacy at Kelly Ingram Park (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham City Schools alumni born in 1963 are invited to a special civil rights commemoration in the Birmingham Civil Rights District and Kelly Ingram Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19. Organizers plan storytelling, reflection, and the "Longest Table of Joy," encouraging participants to wear yellow as they honor Birmingham's pivotal 1963 legacy and foster cross-generational conversations about justice and resilience.
   

4. What's behind your journey? A Birmingham airport exhibit wants to know (wbhm.org) — Travelers flying through Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport can now step into a new WAYHAY video booth in the main rotunda, just past security, to share the stories behind their trips through October. Created by Birmingham native Eunice Elliott, the project aims to spotlight residents' colorful, modern-day journeys and build a large archive of personal travel stories that showcase Birmingham in "living color."
   

5. The 56-foot-tall statue that still defines Birmingham, Alabama (sightseersdelight.com) — Birmingham's iconic 56-foot Vulcan statue on Red Mountain is spotlighted as a symbol of the city's steel-making roots and quirky civic pride. The story traces its journey from the 1904 World's Fair to its role today as a beloved landmark, lookout point, and ever-present reminder of what built the Magic City.
