Recount of Provisional Ballots Determines District 2 BOE Seat
Terri Michal has been named the winner of the District 2 Board of Education seat in Birmingham after a recount from last week's election.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - After a week of recounting the votes in the race for the District 2 Board of Education seat for Birmingham, Terri Mical has been named the winner over fellow newcomer Brandon McCray. After the Aug. 22 elections, the race for the District 2 BOE seat was declared "too close to call" with a mere 12 votes separating Michal and McCray.
After provisional ballots were counted Tuesday, Michal was named the winner. Michael, who is an education activist and co-chair of Moral Movement Alabama and founder of educational advocacy group Support our Students, ran on a platform that includes reviewing school system contracts to ensure they are being followed and the schools are not paying for duplicated services, and to document warranties on work. She also wants to increase community and parental involvement, particularly in elementary schools, and begin a reading initiative that would bring principals, educators and communities together.
