BIRMINGHAM, AL - One of Birmingham's most successful startups of the last decade has announced plans to keep its headquarters in Birmingham, a plan that could add up to 881 jobs in the Magic City. The grocery delivery service was purchased by Target last year.

According to a report by the Birmingham Business Journal, Shipt CEO Bill Smith said the fact that the company was founded in Birmingham – and the support it received from the local community – played a critical role in the company’s success and culture.

Smith said the new jobs will be high-skilled, highly paid positions, including software development, data and other high-tech functions. He said the headquarters will remain in the John Hand Building, but said the company will also look for additional space in the area to accommodate its job growth.

The city of Birmingham has approved $1.762 million in incentives through its new Talent Acceleration, Talent Investment and Talent Optimization programs. Those are under the umbrella of the city’s new Putting People First Fund. It also approved the sale of the parking deck at the John Hand Building, where Shipt is headquartered, for $1 million.
