Sullivan Named Permanent Superintendent For Birmingham Schools

Dr. Mark Sullivan, who had been serving as the Birmingham City School's interim superintendent, has been given the job permanently.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Interim superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan will have the "interim" title taken off, as the Birmingham school board approved naming him the system's permanent superintendent Monday. Sullivan has served as the interim leader of the system since the departure of Dr. Lisa Herring in April.

A native of Birmingham and a product of the city schools, Sullivan has served the system as chief of staff for Herring, and before that as an educator and administrator. He taught fifth grade at Glen Iris Elementary and math at Center Street Middle School before transitioning to administration.

Prior to his role as chief of staff, Sullivan served as Director of Area III, Director of K-8 School Operations, Interim Assistant Superintendent and Academic Officer for the system. He has led Spaulding Elementary School, John Herbert Phillips Academy, Ramsay High School, Glen Iris Elementary School and Elyton Elementary School.

After graduating from Woodlawn High School, Sullivan earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Alabama A&M, his master's degree from Alabama State University, and both his educational specialist and educational leadership doctorate degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
