Suspect Charged In Triple Shooting In Birmingham

A 21-year-old man is charged with murder in a shooting that injured two victims and killed one last week.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — On a day when it seemed the Birmingham police were as busy as they have been all year with shootings around the city, three people were shot July 15, and one of them died. Now, a week later, a suspect in that shooting is behind bars, charged with murder.

Derrick Peterson, 21, is charged in the July 15 shooting death of 28-year-old Shaneia Causwell and the wounding of two of her relatives. An Alabama Media Group report said Peterson was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 9:30 p.m. Thursday and released at 11:15 p.m. after posting $120,000 bond.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. July 15 on 18th Avenue N.W. and Sixth Way in the Sun Valley neighborhood off of Carson Road - not far from Sun Valley Elementary School.

Authorities said a disagreement took place outside the residence there and then turned into a physical fight, which spilled over into the street. Guns were brandished, and shots were fired, resulting in the death of Causwell, and injuries to two male victims. The male victims did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
