Suspect In Ensley Shooting Charged With Capital Murder

A man has been charged with capital murder after police say he shot and killed a woman in her apartment in Ensley Sunday night.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A 28-year-old man has been charged with capital murder after police say he entered a woman's home in Ensley and shot her. Police officials late Tuesday night identified the victim as Denise Fassel.

A report by Alabama Media Group said Cameron Jamer Cook, 28, is charged in Fassel's murder. Police have not released a motive, but said they believe the act was not random. Cook was taken into custody midday Monday outside an the Sky Inn on First Avenue North.

Birmingham police Sgt. Bryan Shelton reported the incidents began at 5:45 p.m. Sunday when the suspect forced his way into an apartment at 2012 Avenue. He reportedly shot Fassel in the torso, then fled, and attempted to steal a car in the parking lot of a Dollar General. When that was unsuccessful, he then robbed a woman in the parking lot of a nearby gas station of her vehicle.
