Transit Board Votes To Terminate Barbara Murdock's Contract

The BJCTA voted to terminate the contract of its executive director amid accusations she used board funds for personal use.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority board has voted in favor of terminating the department's executive director Barbara Murdock.

Murdock was suspended in April amid accusations she had used a BJCTA credit card to pay her personal power bill.

According to a report by the Birmingham Business Journal, the BJCTA board voted 6-1-2 toterminate Murdock, with director Patrick Sellers giving the lone "no" vote and Director Ted Smith and board chair Darryl Cunningham, who joined the board last month, abstaining.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has previously said the city could withhold funding from the BJCTA due to concerns about the organization's leadership and board.

"Recent changes and actions surrounding the BJCTA leadership and its board have raised serious concerns," Woodfin said in a statement. "There have been four board chairs in the last five months. There have been five executive directors in the last eight years. This has created an instability in leadership."
