UAB Seeks Volunteers For Coronavirus Treatment Trials

UAB needs 50 volunteers for COVID-19 treatment and prevention studies.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham has been among the nation's leaders in studying the coronavirus, and infectious disease physicians at UAB say they need volunteers for research on prevention and treatment of the virus.

"We are looking for people to enroll in one of our trials we are talking about today," Dr. Turner Overton of the Infectious Diseases Division at UAB, said. "People who are just becoming aware of their infection but also looking for people who are unaffected who want to protect themselves in our vaccine studies."

UAB issued a statement saying 50 people are needed for the trials, one being the Regeneron Pharmaceuticals treatment used for President Donald Trump. Another trial is a convalescent plasma treatment that takes plasma from people who had COVID-19 and uses their antibodies to reduce symptoms and help prevent the virus in others.
