Winn Dixie Bankruptcy Will Force Several Stores To Close

Winn Dixie is shutting down 94 store locations as it files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Southeastern Grocers, the parent company for Winn-Dixie grocery stores, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and with that filing comes the announcement that nearly 100 stores will close.

In Birmingham, the store in Five Points West will be closing , while Winn Dixie's other Birmingham metro locations in Bessemer, Chelsea, Crestline, Fultondale, Inverness, Pinson, Trussville and Vestavia Hills will remain open. Several other stores in Alabama will close, including stores in Anniston, Daphne, Dothan, Gulf Shores, Mobile, Monroeville, Montgomery and Robertsdale.

“The agreement we announced today is an important step in Southeastern Grocers’ transformation to put our company in the best position to succeed in the extremely competitive retail market in which we do business,” said Anthony Hucker, president and chief executive officer of SEG. “With a foundation built on iconic, heritage banners, and with the strong support of our leadership team, we will work through this process as quickly and efficiently as possible. We are excited to emerge with the optimal store footprint and greater financial flexibility to invest in Southeastern Grocers’ growth.”

After Southeastern Grocers closes the 94 stores in the next 90 days, it plans to open remodeled stores in the next three years.
