Woman Claims Self Defense In Husband's Slaying
A woman who is accused of shooting and killing her husband last year was indicted this week, but claims self defense.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A woman accused of shooting and killing her husband was indicted this week in a Jefferson County court, but claims the killing was a case of self defense. Cheryl Watts was arrested for the August 2019 shooting and charged with murder.
The incident occurred August 31, as officers from the West Precinct responded to 5720 Court O in Ensley to investigate a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers reportedly observed a male subject suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim, identified as 41-year-old Hassan Mallette, was transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue for treatment. Upon arrival at the hospital, the victim was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
