Woman Dies In 2nd Birmingham Homicide Of The Day

A 24-year-old woman was shot and killed in Underwood Park Tuesday night, the second homicide in less than 24 hours in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 24-year-old woman was shot and killed in Underwood Park, which backs up to St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham's Southside. Raven Swain was shot just after 7 p.m. Tuesday while in her car, police said.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said they responded to reports of a person running with a handgun after shots were heard in the area. At the scene, officers were notified of a car lodged in the bushes at the entrance of the park parking lot.

Mauldin said officers discovered Swain in the driver's seat of the car, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Swain was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.

Earlier Tuesday, a man was shot and killed in Ensley. Birmingham has now reported 59 homicides in 2020.
