HOOVER, AL — Although most protests in Birmingham's suburbs surrounding the death of George Floyd and pleas for an end to police brutality have been peaceful and without incident, a protest in Hoover Saturday resulted in a standoff between protesters and police that netted 23 arrests, according to a report by the Hoover Sun.

More than 800 people gathered at the rally next to Hoover City Hall for the event, organized by Alabama Rally Against Injustice. The organization has held similar rallies in Homewood and Mountain Brook, which each involved no police intervention.

The Hoover Sun report said after the scheduled rally ended, approximately 100 protesters stayed behind and gathered in the roadway on Municipal Drive, against orders of the Hoover police, who arrested the protesters who were blocking traffic.
