Here are the top stories in Huntsville today:

  1. City Council unanimously approved a measure to rezone 51 acres of Monte Sano to make it a residential area. Current residents have concerns that the area is not suitable and will not be able to hold up to the multi-family homes planned. (WAFF)
  2. Opera Huntsville is going to host a Juneteenth concert on June 14. The concert will feature black jazz and classical artists and will be held at Robyn’s Garden Winery. Admission will be $10. (WHNT)
  3. Several bridges on Old Big Cove Road are getting widened, according to Commissioner Craig Hill. The bridges are currently not as wide as the road, and there is concern about safety. Construction is not expected to take more than two months once it starts in the next few weeks. (WHNT)
  4. Governor Kay Ivey visited Limestone County Thursday. She gave the State of the State address at a luncheon while she was here. (WAFF)
  5. Two members of the UAH community were recognized this week for American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) awards won during the pandemic. Saroj Kumar is a doctoral student and a graduate teaching assistant and was named Graduate Student of the year in 2021. Dr. Phillip Ligrani is a professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering and was given the 2020 Herman Oberth award. (UAH News)
