Here are the top stories today in Huntsville:
- The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s longest-serving president from 1991-2007, Frank Franz, has died after a long battle. Franz left his mark on UAH with several university buildings, two dorms (including one named after him) and five Greek Life houses all being built as well as multiple buildings expanded during his time as president. - The City Of Huntsville has secured a $20 million RAISE grant to finally be able to go ahead with the Pedestrian Access and Redevelopment Corridor (PARC). The project will help connect Mill Creek, downtown, and Lowe Mill with greenways and a suspended bridge to allow pedestrians to travel these areas on foot despite the major roadways between them. PARC will also allow the city to enhance the area along Pinhook Creek to help lessen flooding. Down the road, this project is planned to be expanded to connect several parts of the city together. - Space Command Commander General James Dickenson visited the Rocket City yesterday for the annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium. According to Gen. Dickenson, the 30 day public comment period on the environmental report draft is almost over, at which time the final decision will be with the Department of Air Force. (WAAY 31)
- A new event, Christmas on the River, is coming to Ditto Landing this December! There will be weekend events, a Christmas tree farm, pet-friendly nights, and fun for the entire family (or just for you)! Christmas on the River will be December 2-31. (WAFF 48)
- Madison Cross Roads Elementary has a new book vending machine! There are extra assignments students can do to earn gold tokens, which are the currency for the vending machine. (WAAY)
