HudsonAlpha + UAH Updates + ALDOT Road Closure

Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:

  1. HudsonAlpha broke ground on an expansion for their campus that will house Discovery Life Sciences, the Center for Plant Science Sustainable Agriculture, and seven greenhouses. The new facility will allow Discovery Life Sciences to take what they do in labs across the country and combine it under one roof. According to Bridget Divers, the expansion was funded by $15 million awarded by the state. (WAAY31)
  2. After Governor Ivey’s announcement that Alabama will stop allowing federal boosts for unemployment after June 19, many businesses in Huntsville are hopeful this will help them get back to normal. Stan Stinson owns restaurants including Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza and Bark and Barrel, and said that they’ve had to adjust hours due to staffing issues. (WAFF)
  3. The Huntsville City Council is working to fill the District 4 School Board seat after Walker McGinnis’s resignation goes into effect on May 30. They are accepting applications through May 21 and an application review committee will be formed by the Council President. This committee will identify finalists to be interviewed at a public City Council meeting. (Huntsville)
  4. Although Officer Darby’s attorney said he will appeal the day the trial ended, this can not happen until after Darby is sentenced. He can appeal within 42 days or file a motion for a new trial or a motion for acquittal after that within 30 days of sentencing, but not before, according to reporter Brian Lawson. (WHNT)
  5. The UAH baseball team made it to the semifinals in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships. They beat Delta State 6-5 and will face them for elimination today at 11 a.m. (UAHChargers)
