Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:

  1. The City of Huntsville has decided to use $1.9 million of their CARES Act funding. The city has hired a consulting team to try to study students in the city and will help lawmakers understand better what students need after the past two years. (WAFF)
  2. The Huntsville City Council has chosen the replacement for the Huntsville City School Board. The vote was 3-2 in favor of hiring Ryan Renaud to fill the seat. Originally, the vote was in favor of Phillip Cagle, but council members went into two executive sessions to discuss, and then Renaud was elected. (AL.com)
  3. Drake State Community and Technical School has seen enrollment double since things started getting back to normal. Many are wanting to get certified for jobs that were considered high demand during the pandemic after they were laid off, according to Julia Smith. (WZDX)
  4. The resolution that was brought forth during the city council meeting to release police body camera footage is already going to be replaced with a more detailed replacement. There are several things they plan to revise, but it is expected that the new version will be completed and ready to be moved forward soon. (WAAY)
  5. Brittnie Granville, a UAH alumna, has won Ms. Black Alabama USA 2021. She plans to use her platform to advocate for Autism awareness. Granville was born and raised in Florence and currently the COO of her daughter Brailynn’s company, Brailynn Camille Enterprises LLC and created a Mommy and Me brand, “My RICH Little Best Friend.” (UAH)

  • The Huntsville City Council unanimously approved a project to develop the old Coca Cola bottling site on Clinton Street into a space that would include things like retail space, office space, and a hotel. (Details)
  • The Crush Wine and Food Festival is coming back to Big Spring Park for the seventh annual event September 23-26. (Details)
  • Construction on Nick Davis Road in Athens starts today and during construction hours, the road will be one lane only. (Details)
