Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today
- Governor Kay Ivey has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Huntsville for those in the homeless population that have a higher risk of getting COVID-19. The money comes out of the $40 million of CARES Act money given to Alabama to use on recovery efforts or preventative measures for future infectious diseases, according to Eddie Burkhalter. - Madison County Schools have seen far more retirements and resignations than they typically would at this time of the year. They will be looking to fill double the employees they normally do before a school year and currently have 200-225 positions open system-wide according to Eric Graves. (WAFF)
- Four teachers in North Alabama have been selected as finalists for this year’s Alabama Teacher of the Year. There are 16 finalists in total from 138 educators that submitted applications from across the state. (WHNT)
- The City of Huntsville has put together a comprehensive look at what the growth of MidCity will look like over the next few years. Trader Joe’s and Color Me Mine pottery studio will open next year. Two apartment communities with retail space are supposed to open by the end of next year and two hotels are slated to open in 2023. (Huntsville)
- Dorothea Schlidt died Monday in Huntsville at the age of 100. Schlidt was the last German rocket team member for Wernher von Braun alive. She was 18 when she became von Braun’s secretary while they were headquartered at the Arsenal and got the job because she could work at night. (AL.com)
