Huntsville Marks 60 Years Since Alan Shepard's Historic Spaceflight

His rocket was made in Huntsville, which is why it is known as Rocket City.

This Wednesday, May 5 marks a special anniversary: 60 years since Alan Shepard became the first American in space. He traveled in the Freedom 7 spacecraft aboard a Mercury-Redstone Rocket. That rocket was made right here in Huntsville, and it launched a big era for us — in fact, it is one of the reasons we earned the name Rocket City and we still are today!
