Huntsville Police Department + UAH Camp

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in the Rocket City.

Up and at 'em, Rocket City! In this weekend update, we'll look at promotions in the Huntsville Police Department, a grant from Governor Ivey, and UAH's special camp!


First this weekend's weather:

The heavy storms are finally over and this whole weekend is partly cloudy. Saturday will have a chance of a few storms and a high of 89 and low of 72. Sunday will have a high of 92 and low of 73.

Here are the top five stories in Huntsville this weekend:

  1. Three police captains in the Huntsville Police Department have been promoted to Deputy Chief. There are more than 70 years of law enforcement service between them. The officers were Captain Charles Brooks, Captain DeWayne McCarver, and Captain Scott Hudson. (Huntsville)
  2. Community Action Partnership of Huntsville-Madison and Limestone Counties Inc. received a grant from Governor Ivey to help weatherize homes in the area. They received $223,254 total. That money will be able to help out low-income, elderly, and disabled residents to help do small repairs and installations that will help lower their bills and reduce the risk of fire and other hazards.   3. UAH hosts GenCyber, a camp for visually impaired students to learn about cybersecurity. Attendees learn bits of computer programming and cryptography and they are taught how to be safe online. (WZDX)
  4. WhistleStop Weekend will be back this year August 13-14. It will now be held at John Hunt Park and the fundraiser will benefit EarlyWorks. There are an expected 150 competitors this year. (WHNT)
  5. Kailyn Grant is a Grand Award Winner in the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Grant is a junior at Bob Jones and used a wet lab at UAH to help complete her project. The goal of her research was to find a way to deliver chemotherapy without the toxicity that causes the side effects. (Madison Record)
