Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:

  1. The Madison County School System is currently facing a need for Resource Officers, as they have 29 campuses and aim to hire a minimum of 11 new officers for the upcoming 2024-2025 school session. These officers play a crucial role in ensuring school safety and preventing incidents of violence within the community. The community heavily depends on the presence of Resource Officers to maintain a secure school environment. (WHNT 19)
  2. Alabama is home to a significant veteran population, with over 375,000 veterans residing in the state — and Madison County alone houses more than 33,000 of them. Headquartered in Huntsville, the nonprofit Still Serving Veterans is dedicated to promoting awareness of their valuable services, which include free career and transition counseling and access to a wide range of resources. Remarkably, the organization has aided more than 1,200 veterans in securing employment, with average salaries exceeding $69,000. (WHNT 19)
  3. Huntsville Police have arrested Devone Edward Modacure and charged him with murder in relation to a shooting that occurred Sunday on Knight Road, which resulted in the death of one person. Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute over money. The U.S. Marshals Service's Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force aided in Modacure's arrest on Monday. (WAAY 31)
