Here are the top stories in Huntsville today:
- City advocate Jackie Reed was remembered fondly at last night’s city council meeting. Her seat was filled with flowers along with a picture of her, and a single rose was at her usual podium. (City of Huntsville)
- Alabama A&M has announced Ka'Lisa Stanfield will take over as the Interim Director of Athletics. Stanfield was previously the Associate Athletic Director and the Senior Woman Administrator at A&M. She is only the second woman to hold this new position in 60 years. There is a nationwide search to permanently fill the position. (WAAY)
- The Derrick Street homeless camp closes today at 11 a.m. According to the city, they have been working with local organizations and the residents to find them other places to live. Six of the 75 current residents have been allowed to move to The Slab, a better monitored homeless camp down the street, others have reunited with family, will move to a shelter, found individual housing, or will go to treatment programs. - OneGenAway will have their food pantry at Calhoun Community College Saturday. Anyone can get groceries (while supplies last) between 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., and Community Awareness for Youth will have backpacks and essential school supplies for students at the same time. Residents won’t have to fill out any forms regarding income or household to receive items. (WAAY)
- Former Huntsville RN Nikki Cappello was sentenced to life in prison Thursday. Cappello was convicted of murdering her husband in 2018 by poisoning him. (WAFF)
