Jem and the Holograms + Point Mallard

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in the Rocket City.

We made it to the weekend, Huntsville! In your weekend Daily, we're going to look at what Jem and the Holograms has going on in Huntsville, a low-cost airline coming to the city, and what UNA's athletic director is doing.

Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:

  1. Breeze Airways has unveiled its debut network made up of 39 nonstop flight routes between 16 cities in the U.S., including Huntsville! Tickets with their introductory fare prices will start at $39. Service to Huntsville will start in July. (USAToday)
  2. A federal lawsuit has been filed against the City of Huntsville and two Huntsville police officers over an Army veteran, Crystal Ragland, that was shot and killed when the police responded to a call about her being in mental distress. The officers were cleared of wrongdoings in their reviews, but the lawsuit alleges that the officers used excessive force and were negligent in the situation. (WHNT)
  3. Huntsville has made Insider Monkey’s list of the 30 Most Affordable Major Cities in the U.S.! Huntsville came in at 13 on the list. Insider Monkey said the city’s cost of living is 5% below the national average, home expenses are 26% lower, and there is an availability of jobs in a wide range of fields. (Insider Monkey)
  4. UNA’s Athletic Director, Mark Linder, has announced that he will step down effective June 1. Linder has been the director for 14 years, and will become a lecturer for the Department of Kinesiology. Kevin Haslam, the VP for University Advancement, will be the interim Athletic Director until a permanent director can be hired. (WAFF)
  5. Calhoun Community College’s Workforce Solutions has announced that they will offer a free plumbing certification program. Applications are due by May 28, and classes will be on Tuesdays from June 8-December 21. Zach Hester said that certification will be available for levels one and two. (WHNT)

  • Huntsville Utilities will close the outside westbound lane of Oakwood Avenue at the Pulaski Pike intersection and the outside northbound lane of Pulaski Pike between Norton Avenue and Dunham Avenue at 7 a.m. today and is expected to keep them closed for 6-8 hours.
  • The application period to fill the District 4 position on the Huntsville City School Board has now ended.
  • The City of Huntsville’s employee spotlight went to Mitchell “Labron” McCamey. Congrats!
