Here are the top stories today in Huntsville:

  1. The University Of Alabama In Huntsville’s famous hockey coach, Doug Ross, has passed away at the age of 70. Ross was a member of Team USA in 1976 before spending 25 years running the UAH hockey team. In his time at UAH, he earned 376 wins, which includes two NCAA Division II National Championships.   2. The Athens Sister City, Stonehaven, Scotland, is hosting a writing competition. Limestone County students have until September 19 to submit an essay or a recipe with a photo of the finished dish to the mayor’s office. The competition is also open to students in Acheres, France, and all three cities will be in a Zoom at the beginning of the month for the announcement of the winners. (The News Courier)
  3. There will be daytime lane closures in southbound lanes of Whitesburg Dr starting today. For the next three to four weeks, the outside SB lane will be closed from Noble Drive to Sanders Road between 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (WAFF)
  4. A man was hit by an SUV on Memorial Parkway, and then was hit by an 18-wheeler and passed away. Authorities don’t think the 18-wheeler driver is aware of the incident and have issued a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) for the driver. (WHNT News 19)
  5. Moon Bakeshop started a Moon Mission-to-Love cookie box fundraiser. They introduced the program in July, and offer a box of 20 cookies that aren’t sold at the bakery to raise money for the New Futures Family Lodge, a homeless shelter in Huntsville. Their goal is to expand the fundraiser in the future to collaborate with other bakeries. (WHNT News 19)
