Here are the top stories today in Huntsville:

  1. Huntsville City Schools have announced that masks will be mandatory for everyone ages two and up when school starts, unless there is a medical condition that makes wearing a mask dangerous, after COVID-19 numbers have started going up again. Some parents are looking to pull their students out of Huntsville City Schools to avoid their children wearing masks. Madison City Schools is still planning on school starting with masks being optional. (WAAY, WHNT)
  2. Huntsville has been named a “Gig City” by the Fiber Broadband Association at a ceremony held at Fiber Connect. Also honored at the ceremony were Huntsville Utilities, the Madison County Chamber, Google Fiber, and the Broadband Group. (WAFF)
  3. The Department of Art, Art History & Design and the Rotorcraft Systems Engineering & Simulation Center at UAH have partnered together to create the Commercial Arts and Technology Center. Students from both departments will be able to utilize tools from the new program to work on projects they were previously unable to do. (Patch)
  4. Cindy Hewitt has been named Executive Director of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library System. She has been serving as the Interim Executive Director since last October. (themadisonrecord.com)
  5. A juror in the Blakely theft trial has been excused. It was revealed that the juror is allegedly the wife of an inmate and that inmate’s release was supposedly dependent on that juror voting not guilty. (WHNT)
