Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:
- NASA announced the winners of their HERC Challenge for design, documentation, and presentation challenges, which were modified to be virtual due to travel restrictions. UAH Team 1 took third place in the overall collegiate awards against national and international student teams. (WDRB)
- Huntsville is one of 11 cities in the state that will not be affected by Senate Bill 119, which will move municipal elections back 12 months one time so that they don’t coincide with presidential elections in the future. This will cause most current leaders to stay in their positions an extra year, and the bill also makes runoffs four weeks instead of six. (WAFF)
- Seven high school seniors in Huntsville City Schools have been chosen as Merit Scholarship Finalists. Grissom High School has Samantha Abercrombie, Franscine Garcia, Ian Mackenzie, and Jessica Smith; Huntsville High has Zachary Barbre and Ardis Haskell; and Ruby Krasnow represents New Century Technology High. - Inpatient care for positive cases of Covid-19 within the Huntsville Hospital Healthcare System has increased by 58% since April 8. According to Paul Gattis of AL.com, these cases would have been contracted before the mask mandate ended, but could be due to relaxing about masking, and Easter and spring break. (MSN)
- The three protesters from last year’s Black Lives Matter protests that did not have charges dropped in June were in court yesterday. Two were convicted of disorderly conduct and ordered to pay court costs and fines of about $500 each, and the third protester was found not guilty after body cam footage showed police pulling him out of his car, according to reporter Ashley Remkus.
