Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:
- With the state’s regular legislative session over for the year, legislators from North Alabama met with voters at the legislative wrap up at the Athens Public Library. They discussed some of the different issues that were addressed in bills that passed and those that didn’t that they look to see again in the future. (WAFF)
- Rainbow Elementary School’s outdoor classroom was certified by state and federal officials. The classroom was designated as both a State Outdoor Classroom and a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat. Some of the things it includes are a sensory garden, a log decomposition station, and a frog bog and pond. (Madison Record)
- William Darby and the City of Huntsville will be in federal court to see if the lawsuits against them by Jeff Parker’s estate will be stayed until after Darby’s sentencing in August or if it will move forward. This case was already continued during Darby’s criminal trial to protect him from self-incrimination. However, with that case ruled on, the attorneys representing Parker’s estate feel that it should be allowed to move forward. (AL.com)
- Huntsville Hospital is looking at the possibility of having the vaccine doses that will expire next month taken and distributed somewhere else. The goal is to make sure doses are not wasted, but demand in the area does not justify the amount of supplies. There is talk of sending it to other states or overseas to countries that were not lucky enough to get the volume of supplies the U.S. did. (WAAY)
- 2021 Black Restaurant Week starts tomorrow in Huntsville. Tonight there will be a community forum at Drake State’s campus cafeteria with local restaurateurs speaking as well as other city leaders. The goal is to emphasize supporting business owners and food service entrepreneurs, so make sure to get out this week and support some of the small businesses in the area! (WHNT)
