Here are the top stories in Huntsville today:

  1. William Darby, the former police officer convicted of the murder of Jeffery Parker, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. That was the minimum of what the state called for. (WHNT)
  2. Madison City Schools has released reports stating that there are 100 more COVID-19 cases this week than there were last week. Meanwhile, Huntsville City Schools have 183 total COVID cases right now. (WHNT/WHNT)
  3. Decatur Animal Services is hosting free animal adoptions August 23-30! There are some exclusions, but the majority of animals will be available for no charge until their funding runs out. (Decatur Animal Services)
  4. UAH Philosophy professor Jeremy Fischer resigned August 16 after trying to persuade UAH to require stricter regulations and the ability to teach from home during the pandemic. He likened the situation to the 1918 flu pandemic, the worst in history, and the Tuskegee Study on black Alabama men with syphilis. (AL.com)
  5. Five Huntsville fire crews responded to a house fire on Hoover Street and Hurst Avenue. Nobody was in the home at the time of the fire, which was called in at 6:19 a.m. (WHNT)
