Morning, people of Montgomery! It's me again, Sammi Caramela, your host of the Montgomery Daily.
First, today's weather:
Plenty of sunshine. High: 68 Low: 48.
Here are the top stories today in Montgomery:
- The final legislative maps for the state of Alabama will be voted on in Montgomery soon, and city officials are concerned about the upcoming redistricting plans. The biggest concerns are over moving cities into districts across party lines, like Republican Spanish Fort moving into Democratic District 33. The state Legislature's special session on redistricting began on Thursday and is likely to extend through much of this week. (AL.com)
- The expungement bid of Claudette Colvin, the 82-year-old civil rights pioneer who was arrested at age 15 for refusing to move to the back of a Montgomery bus in 1955, is inspiring attorneys to seek a similar bid for wiping the arrest records of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. Both civil rights leaders' convictions remain on the books in Alabama's capital for convicted of violating racial segregation laws (Parks) and violating boycott laws (King). According to Montgomery County Circuit Clerk Gina Ishman, expunging court documents removes convictions from defendants' record, but generally does not result in the destruction of documents, such as the historical police and court records involving people like Colvin, King, and Parks. - Early Sunday morning, Montgomery Police responded to a shooting on the 5800 block of Monticello Drive, where they found an adult male victim with a fatal gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and police continue to investigate the incident. (WFSA 12)
