Here are the top stories in Montgomery today:
- On Tuesday evening, the Montgomery City Council voted unanimously to approve its 2022 fiscal year budget, which will give city employees promised raises. Mayor Steven Reed recently proposed a 19% pay raise as a part of his budget plan, though some council members were concerned that such a pay raise would require the city to dip into other funds to maintain financially stable. Some of the agencies that will benefit from these pay raises will be the Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery Fire/Rescue, sanitation, and street maintenance. (WSFA 12)
- On Saturday, there was a shooting in which a 35-year-old Sabrina Bailey was the victim. The shooting occurred at 11:50 p.m. in the area of Narrow Lane Road and Seibles Road, near a Montgomery event venue. She was taken to the hospital by Montgomery fire medics where she remained until her death on Tuesday. This shooting is still under investigation, and any individuals with information are encouraged to reach out. (AL.com)
- The Montgomery Police Department has arrested a suspect following a shooting on Tuesday on the 100 block of Sylvest Drive that left a man in life-threatening condition. (WSFA 12)
- A new monument was unveiled in Montgomery that pays tribute to three enslaved Black women who were subjected to experimental surgery by a 19th-century physician. (APR)
- With the arrival of fall in Alabama, there are a bunch of fairs and festivals planned throughout the state, including 45 must-see events happening from late September through mid-November. (AL.com)
