🌱 Claudette Colvin Records Expunged + Superintendent Fraud Case

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Montgomery.

Good day, people of Montgomery! Sammi Caramela here with the Friday edition of the Montgomery Daily.

First, today's weather:

Fog in the a.m.; cloudy, warm. High: 69 Low: 61.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Montgomery:

  1. The juvenile court records of Montgomery civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin were officially expunged yesterday after 66 years. Claudette Colvin was arrested on March 2, 1955, at the age of 15 for violating bus segregation ordinances — nine months before Rosa Parks. Colvin was then placed on "indefinite probation," which technically ended when she turned 18, but she was never informed about the expiration. Due to the unique public interest and historical significance of her case, Colvin is making the expungement petition and related documents available to the public. (Montgomery Patch)
  2. A Montgomery resident and former Alabama school superintendent pleaded guilty on Thursday to sharing false virtual enrollment data with the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE). William L. Holladay, III, 57, conspired with others to defraud the department by providing falsified records with stolen private school student data, so they could receive additional funding and pocket the cash. Holladay is waiting to be sentenced and is expected to face a maximum five-year sentence paired with monetary penalties. (WRBL)
  3. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has awarded 25 grants totaling more than $9.5 million to help crime victims across the state. The organizations that received grants, which include several that serve Montgomery County, support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and other crimes by providing counseling, safe shelter, court advocacy, legal services, and more.
