Here are the top stories today in Montgomery:

  1. Montgomery has created a dedicated department to address crime in the city. The new Violence and Prevention Department will use data and people in the community to help better understand trends in violence and create solutions. Mayor Steven Reed emphasized that this department will not be comprised of uniformed police officers, but by real Montgomery residents who are trusted within the community. (WSFA 12)
  2. The National Weather Service has issued several flash flood watches for much of Alabama after heavy rains on Monday that are expected to continue through the week. The NWS has predicted 4 to 6 inches of rain for Montgomery between now and Thursday. Drivers are urged to use caution on the roads and not to attempt to drive through flooded areas. (AL.com)
  3. A body was found on Sunday near Highway 80 East and 293 and police are now investigating a death. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released how the person died or if they have identified the victim. (WSFA 12)
  4. After an autopsy was performed on Sergeant Nick Risner at the Alabama Department of Forensics in Montgomery, the body of a slain Sheffield officer was escorted back to his hometown of Huntsville yesterday, with local law enforcement gathered together for his arrival. (WVTM 13)
  5. The annual Alabama Manufacturer of the Year Awards program was held at Montgomery's RSA Activity Center over the weekend, where several area businesses received a prestigious industry honor. (Alabama Political Reporter)
