Here are the top stories today in Montgomery:
- The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles is receiving $700,000 to help reduce the number of crimes committed by former offenders. Director Cam Ward said that this funding will help them to provide better programming, like substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, and the growth of GPS monitoring. This project aims to reduce parole revocations by 50 percent. (WSFA 12)
- Alabama hospitals are facing a blood shortage and have a critical need for donations. This is largely due to the decreased number of people donating blood due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is not uncommon to have blood shortages on a local level, it is rare for a shortage on a state level, and so those who can donate are encouraged to do so. (AP News)
- Two lawsuits have been filed challenging Alabama's newly appointed congressional map. They argue that the new map unlawfully dilutes the voting power of African Americans with only one minority-majority district out of seven. (Alabama Daily News)
- The Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (MACH) is meeting the needs of the increased homeless population by hosting a blanket drive; one took place this past Saturday and two others will take place on each of the next two Saturdays. (WSFA 12)
