🌱 Garden Luminaries For Lives Lost To COVID + Alexander Rd Crash

Here are the top stories today in Montgomery:

  1. On Sunday afternoon, members of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens Board of Directors placed hundreds of luminaries throughout the gardens in honor of the 781 Montgomerians who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitors could place the name of a loved one inside a luminary in remembrance of them. City and county government officials spoke at a program to honor the local lives lost. The luminaries will stay on display until Dec. 8. (Alabama News Network)
  2. A Montgomery woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Alexander Road on Sunday. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Loretta Coats Basinger, 54, was fatally injured when her vehicle left the roadway, struck a road sign, and overturned. Bassinger, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. (WSFA)
  3. Police are currently investigating the homicide of a Montgomery teenager, Trent Wilson Jr. Wilson, 16, received life-threatening injuries during a Friday night shooting that happened in the 100 block of Collinwood Avenue and later died at a nearby hospital. Police ask anyone with information related to Wilson's death to contact authorities. (WSFA)
  4. The Southern Poverty Law Center announced it is putting $100 million toward an effort to increase voter participation in the Deep South over the next decade. (Associated Press)
  5. Toll road developer Tim James, the son of former Alabama Governor Fob James, announced Monday he will be running against incumbent Alabama Governor Kay Ivey in the 2022 GOP primary race when she seeks re-election next year. (Star Tribune)
