Lawsuit Against Alabama + Juvenile Charged In Weekend Shooting

Here are the top stories today in Montgomery:

  1. Prison staffing levels will be an issue in the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit against Alabama. Federal officials have been asked to provide more details behind some of their allegations. U.S. District Judge David Proctor agreed with state lawyers that the Justice Department's allegations of unsafe and unsanitary conditions were overly broad, but the judge refused Alabama's request to dismiss staffing issues from the litigation. (AP News)
  2. Montgomery police have reported a male juvenile has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a 13-year-old. The name and age of the suspect have not been released. According to police, Corday Byrd was pronounced dead at the scene of the 800 block of North Burbank Drive at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
  3. Going forward, you'll be able to learn about important historical events in Montgomery through virtual tours, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (WSFA 12)
  4. There are only a few days left in the Alabama National Fair. The fair opens at 3 p.m. today and tomorrow, with midway rides starting at 5 p.m. (Montgomery Advertiser)
