Spartans Fall Short In Volleyball Semifinals

Mountain Brook made an impressive run in the AHSAA state volleyball tournament, but fell in the semis.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL - The Mountain Brook High School volleyball team made a run at another state championship this week in the AHSAA state tournament, but fell short in the semifinals, losing to McGill-Toolen (16-25, 18-25, 14-25). The loss came after the Spartans’ win over Enterprise (25-8, 25-14, 25-9) in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.

Grace Carr led the way with 12 kills and 9 digs, while Ellie Dayhuff registered 6 kills. Ann Vandevelde racked up 25 assists and 17 digs. Liz Vandevelde finished with 11 digs.

In the quarterfinal match against Enterprise, Ann Vandevelde posted 43 assists and 14 digs, while Carr had 19 kills and, 12 digs and 5 aces. Dayhuff had 12 kills and 3 blocks, while Evelyn King had 19 digs. Liz Vandevelde finished with 12 digs.

The Spartans won state championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and have built one of the strongest programs in the state, but with no seniors on this year's team, eyes are more to the future as the team looks to build on what was an unexpectedly strong 2018 season.
