Burglary Suspect Arrested Behind Center Point Elementary

A suspect in an attempted burglary fled into the woods behind Center Point Elementary School before being arrested and charged.

CENTER POINT, AL - A man was arrested Wednesday and charged with trspassing and public intoxication after he was captured in the woods behind Center Point Elementary School. The school was placed on lockdown while the incident occurred.

Reports from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said at approximately 2:30 p.m. an off duty police officer called the Sheriff’s Office to report a suspicious suspect attempting to burglarize a residence near 23rd Terrace NW in Center Point. After the suspect, identified later as Whitney Williams, saw that he was being observed, he reportedly fled into the woods behind the elementary school and appeared to be carrying unidentified items.

Additional deputies arrived and were able to locate Williams and take him into custody. Law enforcement reports say the suspect was intoxicated but did not have any stolen property in his possession. "The suspect was able to hide or discard whatever he was carrying and the homeowner was unable to determine if anything was missing from his property," the report said. "Williams is a known drug user in the area and a suspect in other crimes."

Williams was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication and Criminal Trespassing with bonds totaling $600.
