TRUSSVILLE, AL - A former Trussville police officer was charged with a felony this week, according to Jefferson County court records. Jason Smith was indicted after authorities say he used his position to access information about a capital murder investigation.

Smith, 42, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 1:34 p.m. and released at 4:01 p.m. after posting $10,000 bond. A report by Alabama Media Group said Smith was terminated April 17 for violating department policy. He previously worked at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Leeds Police Department.

According to court records, Smith accessed information on the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center database. Authorities did not identify the capital murder case in question, but the only current capital murder case in Trussville is a fatal shooting that happened March 28 in the Cracker Barrel parking lot. Bryan Hancock, 22, is charged in the death of 40-year-old Randy Young.
