TRUSSVILLE, AL — National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 26, and the Trussville Police Department is taking part in the nationwide initiative.

National Take-Back Day is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. These include prescribed or over-the-counter drugs that are unused or expired.

You can drop off unwanted medications at the Trussville Police Department at 131 Main Street, in Trussville, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., on Saturday.

These items generally are not accepted at the drop box:

  • Needles or other sharps
  • Asthma inhalers
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Iodine-containing medications
  • Illicit drugs or substances (including marijuana which is still a schedule 1 drug under federal law), and any prescription medications obtained illegally.

Now, for the first time, DEA will also accept vaping devices and cartridges at any of its drop off locations.

At the last Take-Back Day in April, more than 6,250 sites across the nation collected unwanted or expired medications totaling 937,443 pounds (468.72 tons). The total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the fall of 2010 is 11,816,393 lbs. (5,908.2 tons).
