Alabama Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday Set For July 21-23

From 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 21, until midnight, Sunday, July 23, the state will waive its 4% sales tax on school-related supplies and more

TUSCALOOSA, AL — It's roughly a month before school starts back in Tuscaloosa County and parents and even those without children will have the chance to save some money with Alabama's upcoming back-to-school sales tax holiday from July 21-23.

According to the Alabama Retail Association (ARA), this marks the 18th year the state has offered a sales tax holiday for school-related items and the seventh time the annual tax holiday will take place on the third full weekend of July.

ARA says from 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 21, until midnight, Sunday, July 23, the state will waive its 4% sales tax on school-related supplies and clothing.

Tuscaloosa County, along with the cities of Northport and Tuscaloosa, are also among 325 cities and counties throughout Alabama also waive their local taxes over this time.

ARA reports that in some areas the savings for shoppers could be as high as 10%.

ARA says exempt items include:

  • Clothing priced at $100 or less per article;
  • School supplies valued at $50 or less per item;
  • Books that cost $30 or less per book; and
  • Tablets, laptops, computers and printers with a selling price of $750 or less.
