Tuscaloosa City Schools announced Tuesday that Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Middle claimed the top spot in the publication's newly released 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings.

Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary was also recognized, ranking No. 15 among Alabama's public elementary schools.

Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary serves students in grades 1-5, while Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Middle serves students in grades 6-8.

Both schools operate as specialty programs within Tuscaloosa City Schools, accepting students from across the district through an application-based admissions process.

The annual rankings evaluate public schools based on student achievement in reading and mathematics, using performance data from state assessments.

"To have our middle school ranked No. 1 in Alabama and our elementary school recognized among the top 15 is an incredible honor for our entire school community," Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary and Middle Principal Constance Pewee-Childs. "These rankings reflect the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the tremendous support of our families."

Pewee-Childs said the recognition underscores the academic progress being made at both schools.

"We are proud of this recognition, but what matters most is the learning and growth happening in our classrooms every day," she said.

Tuscaloosa City Schools Superintendent Mike Daria also praised the achievement, pointing to the collaboration between educators, students and families as a driving force behind the schools' success.

"We are incredibly proud of the students, teachers and school leaders at Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools for earning this statewide recognition," Daria said. "Being ranked the No. 1 middle school in Alabama is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the high expectations and strong instruction taking place in our schools."

Daria added that the results highlight the district's broader commitment to academic excellence.

"These results demonstrate what is possible when talented educators, engaged families and hardworking students come together with a shared commitment to excellence," he said.

TCS says seven of Alabama's top 10 elementary schools in the U.S. News rankings are magnet schools.
